The Shift from Mercury Lamps to UV LEDs in Machine Vision Lighting

UV illumination is changing as regulatory and commercial pressure moves many industrial applications away from mercury-based lamps. This change is not based on a simple worldwide ban. Mercury UV curing lamps remain viable in many applications, but the long-term market movement is toward LED-based systems.

Mercury lamps are established, low cost, high power and multiwavelength, but they also come with practical limitations. Their lifetime is short, often measured in hundreds of hours. They generate a lot of heat because much of the applied power is wasted thermally. They also require warmup time, which means they are often left on for long periods rather than used on demand.

LED-based UV solutions offer a more controlled approach. They provide long lifetimes of 10,000+ hours, single-wavelength precision and on-demand operation. Because LEDs consume power when active, their operational lifetime can extend further when duty cycles allow. Certain UV LEDs can convert nearly 40% of applied power into optical output, with the whitepaper noting that this applies to the 395 to 405 nm range.

The right LED solution starts with the application. ProPhotonix can configure wavelength, intensity, form factor and control to find the best fit without over-specification or unnecessary complexity.

For applications that require stable, controlled and uniform UVC illumination, ProPhotonix offers the UVC-PRO Area Light, engineered for reliable performance in industrial systems and production lines.
