The reliability of a laser module depends directly on the performance of its semiconductor diode. Over time, this laser diode undergoes a natural aging process that impacts output power and can reduce system stability. Understanding the factors behind this degradation is essential to laser module design to anticipate failures and extend laser lifetime.

What Causes Aging

Aging occurs due to subtle internal changes within the semiconductor material and its thermal and electrical connections.

The main contributors include:

  • Crystal lattice dislocations, which affect electron flow and optical efficiency.
  • Facet oxidation, which gradually reduces optical output and can trigger localized damage.
  • Degradation of solder joints and thermal interfaces, which raises internal temperature and accelerates wear.

These effects accumulate slowly over time, making continuous monitoring of optical performance critical to maintaining reliability.

2,500 hours at 45 °C
1,250 hours at 55 °C

Effective thermal management: through optimized heat paths, heatsinking, or active cooling is essential to ensure long-term performance and system stability.
