Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems are used extensively in policing and law enforcement and are now being used to monitor areas such as car parks, congestion zones and toll booths. ANPR systems must quickly and accurately identify vehicles through the use of optical character recognition (OCR).

LED illuminators are ideal for use in ANPR systems due to their long lifetimes, availability in a range of wavelengths and suitability for strobing.

The choice of wavelength for an ANPR illuminator will depend on a number of factors including the type of licence plate being inspected. IR wavelengths are often preferred because they are not visible to the driver and because of the retro-reflective qualities of many licence plates. Compact lighting is advantageous as it allows for the light to be placed close to the cameras maximising the light reflected from the number plate. ProPhotonix’ strength in Chip-on-Board technology allows us to produce extremely bright and compact illuminators to suit your requirements.

ANPR illuminators must also be robust, particularly if being used in a mobile system, and long lasting as maintenance can be costly. ProPhotonix provide illuminators with MTBFs of up to 100,000 hours.
